Kurt Sutter Talks Season 3
Monster’s and Critics Exclusive Interview
Monsters and Critics: We already know that Hal Holbrook will be in a few episodes playing Gemmas father, but Im wondering if you could maybe tell us about some of the guest stars and what their roles are in season three. Kurt Sutter: I think all the turmoil that was drummed up last season in terms of Jax and Clay and everything that happened with Gemma. A lot of that takes a back seat this season.

FX Arms Itself to Defend ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Suit

“Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter wasn’t kidding when he said FX’s parent company is as “aggressive as I am” in defending lawsuits. The Fox-owned network is wasting no time responding to the $5 million idea theft lawsuit filed this week that alleges the show was stolen from a pitch by the former head of the NYC Hells Angels.
We’ve learned FX has hired well-known Hollywood litigator Scott Edelman of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher to defend the suit filed by Chuck Zito, who claims “Sons” was his idea.
Edelman is a big gun in high-stakes entertainment litigation. He’s currently involved in another high-profile TV spat, representing Warner Bros. in the massive profit-sharing lawsuit filed in March by the creators of “Smallville.” Given Zito’s background and Sutter’s anger, this should be an epic fight.
And if you still haven’t read Sutter’s “Douchebaggery is the Greatest Form of Flattery” response to the suit, please stop whatever you’re doing and check it out.

We So Wish We Could Be There….
Sons of Anarchy ride into California mountains for poker run

This weekend the mountains of California will rumble with motorcycles weaving their way through scenic back roads in a star-studded poker run and events.
Celebrities from MTV to SOA will be attending Big Bear Choppers’ ‘Ride the Mountain’ Bike Show, concert and Poker Run taking place at Snow Summit Mountain Resort in beautiful Big Bear Lake California.
From MTV’s ‘Jersey Shore’ deejay Pauly D and riding in from FX’s popular motorcycle drama ‘Sons of Anarchy’, cast members Jax (Charlie Hunnam), Tig (Kim Coates), Juice (Theo Rossi), Chibs (Tommy Flanagan), Unser (Dayton Callie) and Piney (William Lucking) have all confirmed to attend the Big Bear Choppers event on Saturday June 19th.
This will be the eighth annual show in which visitors get to ride the San Bernardino Mountains to Snow Summit Resort to enjoy music, vendors, entertainment, BBQ and a bike show at a premier southern California destination. This event is the only run of its kind ever to be held in the San Bernardino Mountains and Big Bear Choppers’ event has grown by the thousands every year.
This year Big Bear Choppers is partnering with San Bernardino Professional Firefighters to make this the best poker run in Southern California and will allow participants the choice of two starting locations. The first at Quaid Harley Davidson, which will be led by Kevin Alsop from Big Bear Choppers and the second at the BBC facility in Big Bear Lake.
The entry fee is $35 per poker hand and includes event entrance, t-shirt and event pin. The run takes participants up the mountain, around the lake and throughout Big Bear Valley; all hands must be turned in by 2 p.m .at the BBC Factory registration booth.
The Ride the Mountain Bike Show returns again this year with the coveted Big Bear Choppers trophies currently being fabricated at the facility with organizers adding more categories this year in order to attract more builders.
Since the event is hosted by ‘Big Bear’ Choppers and the ‘wildlife’ of the mountain may be stirring it seems apt the MC of the event will be none other than the star of Animal Planets “Shorty’s Rescue,” Shorty Rossi.

How Maggie Siff Embraces Her Dark Side
What a wild ride ‘Sons Of Anarchy‘ has been for Maggie Siff.
Hot off a run on Season 1 of AMC’s acclaimed ‘Mad Men,’
Siff signed on for FX’s then-new biker drama, playing
mildish-mannered Dr. Tara Knowles. Flash-forward two
seasons and the healer is creating patients, roughing up
tattling hospital administrators who dare to threaten the
career of this “old lady.”
Fancast invited Siff to share with us how she came to
embrace Tara’s darker side – and reveal, surprisingly, how
the doc is not much unlike herself.
You just got back from the latest Season 3 table read. How
are things shaping up thus far?
They’re looking good! We’re in the middle of shooting our
fifth episode and reading our sixth, and things are heating
up. There’s not much I can say about the third season; they’
ve sworn us to secrecy.
We can only imagine what Tara’s mindset is these days. So
much went down in the Season 2 finale. Half-Sack got killed,
little Abel was kidnapped by Cameron Hayes….
That’s true. A lot of this season really is taken up with the
events that unfolded in the last episode of the second
season.
Jax (played by Charlie Hunnam) must be on the warpath.
Yeah, well… One of the things this show really explores is
how these people are warriors, they’re fighters, and they
express their anger pretty immediately and fiercely. You can
imagine what the aftermath of an event like that is.
Exclusive: Taryn Manning Returns To ‘Sons Of Anarchy’
Series creator Kurt Sutter told the Chicago Tribune that a
chunk of this season will unspool in Ireland, home base to
SAMCRO-Belfast. Might Jax or Tara wind up over there?
There are definitely storylines that are unfolding there, but
there are also storylines unfolding in Charming
simultaneously. Some people will end up there… and some
won’t. That’s all I’m going to say! [Laughs]
That dual narrative – and exploring the oft-mentioned
Belfast charter – would seem to deliver some very dense
storytelling.
It’s kind of amazing. There are so many storylines and they’
re so intricately plotted, and the introduction of a whole new
charter…. It is very dense and layered and complicated, but
in an exciting way.

Emmy Support for SOA is Building Up
The Emmy nominations will not be announced on July 8th but many TV critics are offering their opinions about which “Sons of Anarchy” cast members deserve to be nominated. The following comments come from Alan Sepinwall from hitfix.com.
“First up is arguably the toughest field of any of the acting categories: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series….this category is a beast, and that’s even with an entire nomination’s field worth of terrific supporting actors who submitted themselves as guest stars – including John Lithgow from “Dexter,” Walton Goggins from “Justified,” Zach Gilford from “Friday Night Lights,” Robert Morse and Jared Harris from “Mad Men,” Adam Arkin from “Sons of Anarchy,” Henry Ian Cusick from “Lost,” etc. My initial list of potential nominees ran more than 20 names, thanks in part to ensemble shows like “Mad Men,” “Lost,” “Breaking Bad” and “Sons of Anarchy” that had multiple deserving nominees.”
“Ultimately, I decided the only way I could sanely approach this was to adopt a share the wealth approach and pick only one actor per show….you can’t go wrong with any of at least three “Sons of Anarchy” actors here: Ron Perlman, Ryan Hurst and Kim Coates. Perlman was involved in one of the best scenes on any drama anywhere this season (Gemma’s confession in “Balm”), but Hurst and Coates were both sensational in showing Opie and Tig’s anguish over the murder of Opie’s wife. Splitting hairs at this point, but I guess I’d pick Ryan Hurst based on “the outlaw had mercy” scene. ”
We couldn’t agree more Alan!
The Hollywood Reporter posted a story titled “Critic’s Picks for Emmy’s.” For Drama Series, Maureen Ryan (Chicago Tribune) picked Sons of Anarchy.
Maureen Ryan (Chicago Tribune): ’Sons of Anarchy’ (FX), for some reason, is not on awards radars, and it should be. It is a jaw-droppingly excellent show, and has kept me on the edge of my seat while it fires on all cylinders.”

The Emmy’s – Casting Directors Discuss Who Should Be Nominated
Casting directors eye Sagal and Hunnam for Emmys
LOS ANGELES (Back Stage) – Great casting directors know great acting. Back Stage asked several of them who they think should be recognized by the Emmy Awards this year. Nominations will be announced on July 8, with the main ceremony set for August 29.
“I think that if Katey Sagal does not get nominated for her work on ‘Sons of Anarchy,’ there is a serious problem in this industry. There is no one else I can see in that part. She is it; she owns that through her bones. I also think Justin Chambers has done the best work of his career this season on ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ He brought so much nuance and depth to a character we already knew and loved.”
– JEN LEVY (“The Go-Getter,” the upcoming “Joint Body”)
“Katey Sagal on ‘Sons of Anarchy.’ I think the performance is full and complex, and given the possibilities for grandstanding in that role, it is remarkably contained. The depth of mother love is vast, and I am so impressed that every scene seems to be played from a wholly honest place.”
– ALEXA FOGEL (“Oz,” “The Wire,” “Treme”)
“Charlie Hunnam on ‘Sons of Anarchy’: His ability to lose his own British accent alone is worthy of an award. He is immensely appealing, always true; his work is riveting. The small screen is lucky to have him. ”
– PAMELA RACK GUEST (“First Degree,” “The Chosen One”)

“Sons of Anarchy” at Comic Con on July 25th
Kurt Sutter Confirmed Attendance Via Twitter: “We’re comin’ to comic con, bitches!”
Sutter confirmed Maureen Ryan’s announcement that “Sons of Anarchy” will be hosting a panel during the four-day conference held in San Diego, California from July 21st through the 25th . Read below the blog announcement that Sutter linked up via his Twitter page. The panel date given is July 25th.
Guess who’s coming to Comic-Con? ‘Castle,’ ‘Sons of Anarchy,’ ‘Big Bang Theory’ and more
It’s that time of year again! Time to start getting ready for the annual pop-culture extravaganza known as San Diego Comic-Con.
My Comic-Con spies have been working overtime and multiple sources have supplied exclusive info on TV-related panels that will be taking place at this year’s mid-summer shebang. There are quite a few first-timers at the con this year: “Castle,” “Sons of Anarchy,” “Archer,” “No Ordinary Family” and “White Collar” will be among the newbies this time around.
There are many more updates to come, so don’t fret if you don’t see some of your favorite shows mentioned here. This is just a preliminary list and there are sure to be more announcements about who’s going to San Diego in the weeks leading up to the July 22-25 event. There’s no news yet on which actors and creators will attend panels for their shows; all those details should emerge in coming weeks.
(And yes, unfortunately Comic-Con tickets are sold out, but you can often catch excerpts or full panels on various network Web sites in the days after the big convention, and if news breaks, you can be sure it’ll be tweeted/blogged by myself and others in attendance.)
