JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq – Cast members from the television series “Sons of Anarchy” visited service members March 14 to March 16 at Joint Base Balad, Iraq, and Contingency Operating Base Taji, Iraq.
Mark Boone Jr., who portrays “Bobby Elvis,” Theo Rossi, who portrays “Juice”, Dayton Callie, who portrays “Chief Unser,” and Kim Coates, who portrays “Tig”, all took part in a weeklong United Service Organizations tour, making stops in Kuwait and Iraq.

“Sons of Anarchy,” which airs on FX, is currently between its second and third season, with filming slated to begin again when the actors return to the U.S.  The actors came to Iraq to show their support for service members overseas, said Air Force Staff Sgt. Darlene Gaskill, the noncommissioned officer in charge of entertainment with the Expeditionary Force Support Squadron, 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing.

“They’re doing an autograph session to shake hands and let them know they appreciate what the troops are doing,” said Gaskill, a Hammond, Ind., native. She said most of the service members and civilians that attended the public events have been big fans of the show.

The actors held meet-and-greet events at both the East and West Morale, Welfare and Recreation centers, and one at Ciano’s restaurant at JBB over the course of thee days. During the tour, cast members also stopped at COB Taji, Iraq, for three days and three days at Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait.

Cast members made several public appearances and took every opportunity to pose for photos with service members, said Gaskill.

“The cast is very impressed and very grateful for everthing the troops do,” she said. “This is their way of giving back to them. It means so much to them to have that individual thank you with each troop.”

Gaskill said the turnout for the meet and greets were some of the largest of any celebrity event at JBB. In three days, the cast members met with more than 1,000 troops at JBB and 500 at COB Taji, she said. They visited different units and squadrons, and met with patients currently receiving medical care at the Air Force Theater Hospital at JBB, said Gaskill.
“They have been all over the base, and at every location there are literally hundreds of Airmen and Soldiers who are just waiting to tell them how big of fans they are,” she said. “In return, (the cast members) tell them how much they appreciate what they do to protect their freedom.”

It has been amazing to see and interact with the service members, said Coates, who was born in Canada and now resides in Los Angeles.

“We give back in a tiny way for what all you men and women do for us back home,” said Coates. “What you guys do is very important; we all want you to come home safe soon.”

Meeting the cast members from “Sons of Anarchy” is a great opportunity for service members, said Sgt. Scott Voigt, the noncommissioned officer in charge of operations with the 102nd Quartermaster Company, 80th Ordnance Battalion, 15th Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary).

“There isn’t anything better than having them come out and boost the morale of Soldiers,” he said. Voigt, a Peoria, Ill., native, said the cast members visited his company and spent time with the Soldiers. “They loved seeing these guys, absolutely loved it,” he said. “They see these guys on TV and … when one of them comes up and shakes your hand and says, ‘Good job,’ that’ll boost anyone’s morale.”

News From Baton Rouge – “The Ledge” Filming

Charlie Hunnam’s Latest Project

180px-Jackson_Teller

It’s not something you see every day — a man getting ready to jump from a tall building. But that’s exactly what people were seeing for a few days last week at the corner of Convention and Third streets downtown.

Not to worry.

A closer look would have revealed several cameras aimed at the rooftop, yellow tape blocking off the streets below, and a throng of filmmakers milling about on the sidewalk. Yet another movie is being shot in Baton Rouge. This time, it’s “The Ledge,” directed and written by Matthew Chapman, and starring Terrence Howard, Charlie Hunnam, Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler and Christopher Gorham.

The film is a suspense thriller that centers on a hotel manager (Hunnam) preparing to take his life by jumping off a ledge. A police detective (Howard) is called to try to talk him down. The hotel manager, it turns out, has been having an affair with a woman (Tyler) who is trapped in an unhappy marriage, and the husband has found out about it.

“But it’s more complicated than that,” said producer Michael Mailer. “When I first read the script, I immediately recognized the possibilities. I was very excited and knew it would make a terrific film.”

“It’s about people in unusual circumstances, going through a serious emotional dilemma,” Mailer said. “There was definite risk in making this kind of film, but I think it will break through. It’s serious and intense, but it has broad appeal. It’s ultimately a powerful love story.”

Mailer is proud of the strong cast that has been assembled for “The Ledge.” He calls Hunnam “the next Heath Ledger.”

The film is actually set in Baton Rouge, Mailer said. “We were looking for a small, pleasant city, and we knew right away that Baton Rouge fit the bill. It’s a lovely city. It’s authentic. It had the right look, (and the right ledge).”

During post-production, some work will be done on a green screen, Mailer said, “but it’s always better to be as realistic as possible. Actually being on that rooftop conveys a sense of vertigo. And you can’t simulate birds flying by.”

Another reason filmmakers chose Baton Rouge was for its logistical help. “The people who helped us orchestrate things were amazing,” Mailer said. “The city has been very helpful to us.”

Like other filmmakers before him, Mailer mentions the state’s tax incentive program, which has made Louisiana a top destination for film production.

“Your politicians really got it right when they created this tax credit program,” he said. “It’s very favorable to the filmmakers. It saves us a lot of money, and I would definitely come back here to do another film.”

Mailer adds that he knows people in the industry who have either moved to Louisiana or bought a second home here because so many films make their way here. Actors, he said, now have as much or more opportunities in Louisiana than they do in New York.

The cast hasn’t had much downtime, Mailer said. “Their days are really long and intense. When they’re not filming, they’re exhausted and they try to catch up on their sleep. But we’ve all enjoyed being in Baton Rouge.”

Mailer said the cast and crew will film here through the end of next week. He hopes to release “The Ledge” by late spring 2011.

Tommy Flanagan makes return to UK screens in cult biker TV show

SCOTTISH-BORN actor Tommy Flanagan is set to make a return to British TV screens in the US biker show ‘Sons of Anarchy’.

The show follows the lives of a Californian motorbike gang and is now being shown in the UK on Five USA, with the second series about to start on Bravo.

Flanagan, who’s appeared in many top movies, including Braveheart and Gladiator, says he can’t wait to climb aboard a Harley Davidson once again, as hard-as-nails biker ‘Chibs’.

He said: “I am loving it. I get to ride motorcycles and hang around with great people all the time. It is just great.

“I even get to take the bike home at the end of the day. It is black, chrome and customised especially for me – it’s as cool as hell,” Flanagan told the Scottish Sunday Mail.

Flanagan, who includes Mel Gibson as one of his many A-list friends, says his success is partly thanks to fellow Scot Robert Carlyle.

“Acting never crossed my mind for a moment when I was growing up, but after I was attacked it was Robert Carlyle and Caroline Paterson, who had created the Raindog theatre company, who suggested that I should take up acting.”

Sons of Anarchy is on Five USA on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10pm. Series two starts on Bravo on April 28.

A Very Pleased Tommy Flanagan
Filed in News • March 21st, 2010 • Add Comments? (1)

TOUGH guy actor Tommy Flanagan still has to pinch himself every time he wakes up in his home in the hills above Malibu. The boy from Glasgow’s tough Easterhouse scheme never dreamt of a career in acting, never mind one which has seen him appear in some of Hollywod’s biggest hits, including Braveheart and Gladiator. Now he is starring in one of America’s most popular TV shows, Sons of Anarchy.

chibs

The show, about Harley Davidson-riding biker outlaws, starts filming its third series next month and Tommy can’t wait to get back in the saddle as hard-as-nails biker Chibs.

He said: “I am loving it. I get to ride motorcycles and hang around with great people all the time. It is just great.

“I even get to take the bike home at the end of the day. It is black, chrome and customised especially for me – it’s as cool as hell.”

Sons of Anarchy follows the lives of a Californian motorbike gang run by Clay Morrow, played by Ron Perlman, and the son of Clay’s wife Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam).

The acclaimed show is written and produced by Kurt Sutter, who also wrote The Shield, and he was keen to get the cast involved in the development of their characters.

This was something Tommy, 44, was particularly pleased about when he heard the writers’ attempts at Glasgow slang.

He said: “Kurt really likes to involve us in the writing process which is great, especially after his first attempts at writing my dialogue. He had found some stuff on the internet but it was all: ‘teuchtar, hoots mon’ type of stuff. “I told him I would do it myself, thank you very much.

“He is brilliant though and there is a lot more to the show than just violence. There is a lot of emotion too, which I enjoy.”

Filming Sons of Anarchy is also a fantastic experience for Tommy because he gets on so well with the rest of the cast.

He said: “We all have such a laugh together.

“Ron Perlman – you know, the guy from Hellboy – is one funny guy and then, of course, there is also Charlie Hunnam on set too.

“He and I go way back and because he is from Newcastle and I am from Glasgow we are the same kind of guys.”

In the UK, Sons of Anarchy is just beginning to get a firm fan base with series one being shown on Five USA and season two about to start on Bravo, but in America the show is massive.

So much so that Tommy cannot walk the streets anymore without being recognised.

He said: “It is unbelievable. I don’t mind it at all because it is part of the job and people have kind of known me since I did Braveheart.

“But ever since Sons of Anarchy hit the screens it has become incredible.

“I suppose it is also because I am hard to miss as I am 6ft 1in tall with a huge scar on my face.”

Tommy recently bumped into old friend Mel Gibson, the man who gave him his first big break in Braveheart, in a Hollywood restaurant. Tommy said: “I was sitting having a meal the other night when I heard someone say my name as they walked by.

“I looked up and realised it was Mel so we started chatting away.

“He said to me. ‘My god Flanagan, you can actually speak English now’.

“So I got the waiter to take over a glass of milk to him.

“Next thing I know he is giving me the finger across the restaurant, so I give him a two-finger salute right back.”

Hanging out in Malibu, chatting to A-List friends and being recognised in the street is all a long way from Tommy’s early years in Easterhouse.

He started out as a DJ before he was badly slashed in an attack.

He said: “It is all such an unbelievably long way from my roots.

“I mean it is not just a case of pinching myself, I have to give myself a good slap from time to time.

“Acting never crossed my mind for a moment when I was growing up, but after I was attacked it was Robert Carlyle and Caroline Paterson, who had created the Raindog theatre company, who suggested that I should take up acting.

“I literally fell through the door into it. I mean I was just in Glasgow getting caught up with stuff and one day Bobby asked me why I didn’t get into acting.

“At first I thought no way, but before I knew it I was on a stage, terrified out of my mind and about to give my first performance.

“I just loved it though.

“And it was watching these guys and the likes of Peter Mullan that I learnt how to be an actor.

“If it wasn’t for all of them I wouldn’t be where I am today. It is actually quite an unbelievable story.

“I know I am very fortunate to be where I am now, working away.”

Tommy is undeniably happier than ever. Not only has he succeeded where many have failed in carving out a career for himself in Hollywood, he has also found happiness with the woman in his life Dina, who also happens to be a film producer.

He said: “She is my babe and a gorgeous producer too.

“She is from Palm Springs and is a total Californian girl. She is wonderful.”

Although even living in California can’t stop Tommy from getting homesick every now and then.

Being a typical Glaswegian though, he also can’t help rubbing in the delights of his new life to those back home.

He said: “I do miss Glasgow but Malibu is home now.

“I love it here and when I do go back to Scotland it takes me a bit of time to acclimatise.

“I am a spoilt so-and-so. I live in the mountains of Malibu in the most gorgeous house and I phone my mum every day and tell her that I have got bad news – that it is only 70 degrees here.”
