Ron Perlman’s “Perls” of Wisdom
Filed in News • January 16th, 2012 • Add Comments?

Few actors have enjoyed careers as diverse as Ron Perlman’s. Playing the ruthless Clay Morrow in the FX mega-hit Sons of Anarchy is only the latest highlight of a deep filmography which includes two turns as Hellboy in the blockbuster film series, a starring role in the late ’80s TV series Beauty and the Beast, and a critically-acclaimed performance in the French-made City of Lost Children, a role for which Perlman learned to deliver his lines in French.
Still, that’s just a smattering of Perlman’s varied body of work. And with a résumé that long comes a free pass from ever having to explain yourself—whether you’re voice acting for a video game or electing to do a straight-to-DVD movie like Scorpion King 3 (on sale now).
Perlman recently caught up with Men’s Fitness to talk about his many roles, and why he just might be the ultimate MF success story.
You say you were overweight as a kid. How heavy did you get?
I was 14 years old and over 300 pounds. I guess as a kid, I just did a lot of comfort eating. This is what I did to make myself feel better or feel safe or whatever. I’m able to manage it with enough success that I’m always in shape to do a movie. I feel like I’m really lucky to have become an actor and stay busy as an actor because I’m not sure I would have stayed in great shape. But in this profession, you have to.

Season 5
Filed in News • January 11th, 2012 • Add Comments?

I’ve returned to my office in the asshole of North Hollywood.  Feels like only yesterday that season 4 ended (that’s sarcasm).  Taking meetings, hiring a couple new writers.  Slowly slipping on the leathers.  And the ball-gag.

I’m back with my writing team at the end of the month and we’ll go back into production mid-May.
Here’s what I know about season 5.  No spoilers.  Just thematics.  I’ve always seen the show as the Prince’s journey.  Jax is a man, but he’s been unsure of the kind of man he will be.  He has yet to decide on his legacy.  Season 5 will force him to make those decisions.  This season will be a pivotal one in the arc of the series.  Not that all the seasons haven’t been essential in shaping the mythology, but this season will begin to lay track for how the series ends.  In a feature film, season 5 would be the end of act two.  Where the hero has been faced with the primary conflict and obstacles and is forced to make a decision that either ends well or not-so-well.

Kim, Ryan, and Theo Exclusive Interview
Filed in News • December 29th, 2011 • Add Comments?

The hit FX drama Sons of Anarchy is back for Season 4, with the boys of SAMCRO fresh out of jail after a 14-month stint and arriving back in Charming, California to find that their town not only has new, no-nonsense law enforcement, but a mayor who is determined to change things. While the club is faced with a decision that could challenge everything they’ve always stood for, Jax (Charlie Hunnam) is forced to start thinking about what’s best for his family.

During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, co-stars Kim Coates (“Tig”), Ryan Hurst (“Opie”) and Theo Rossi (“Juice”), who also play three of the most intriguing club members, talked about what it’s been like to collaborate on the development of their roles for four seasons now, how the strength of the acting makes the viewers want to know absolutely everything about the characters, what makes bikers so attractive and interesting to people, how they’ve loved taking the journey that show creator Kurt Sutter and the writing staff has led them on, and how the crew dedicates everything to helping make the show the #1-rated series in FX history. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Question: How has it been for you guys to collaborate on these characters for four seasons now?

THEO ROSSI: It’s crazy. The way the show goes is that you learn a little more about each character, with every single episode and definitely every season. I felt like, right away, we learned so much about Tig (Kim Coates) and Opie (Ryan Hurst) and who they were. They got really defined. You learn a little about different guys, here and there. With Juice, I always felt like you learned a little about him, and then a little more about him, but this year, since there’s such a huge focus on the town and the guys and the club and the internal relationships with everybody, you’re going to get a ton about everybody, really fast.

KIM COATES: In the first season, around Episode 6 or 7, Ryan [Hurst] said to me, “[Kurt] Sutter has found Tig’s voice,” and I never forgot that. I’ve never done this before. I’d never done a regular role on a television series before. I’d done arcs, but not this. I really, truly did not know what to expect. So, when Ryan said that to me, I got what he meant. Kurt was really finding Tig’s voice in that first season, near the end. I think that must be a big challenge for a showrunner to find the voice for the 11 brilliant actors that we have on this show – and that’s just the regulars, let alone the guest stars and whatnot – without knowing us as actors, and then getting to know us a little bit. We’re really good actors. These guys are great actors. We want more. We want to be involved, all the time, and sometimes that’s tough. But, I think the trust level has to be there. In the end, this will someday come to an end with the story that Kurt ultimately wanted to tell.

Kurt Wins Lawsuit
Filed in News • December 15th, 2011 • Add Comments?

Chuck Zito sued for $5 million in June 2010 claiming he had developed a show called Nomads (later The Wild Angels) and had agents at ICM set up a pitch meeting with FX chief John Landgraf, during which Zito says he discussed ideas for a show about a motorcycle club.

FX and Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter have prevailed in a lawsuit filed by an ex-Hell’s Angel biker who claimed the idea for the hit drama series was stolen.
Chuck Zito sued FX for $5 million in June 2010 claiming he had developed a show called Nomads (later The Wild Angels) and had agents at ICM set up a pitch meeting in 2004 with FX chief John Landgraf, during which Zito says he discussed ideas for a show about a motorcycle club. FX passed on the project but later developed Sutter’s Sons, which ICM packaged and recently concluded its 4th season as a big hit for the network. “FX was obligated to pay Zito the reasonable value of his ideas, hire him to work on the series and afford him screen credit as creator,” the lawsuit alleged. “Defendants breached an implied-in-fact contract with defendant.”

Help Support The Troops
Filed in News • December 15th, 2011 • Add Comments? (3)

I need some help to support some troops in Afganistan. They have just finished building a bar in the Morale Room which includes a poker table & pool table they have built from scratch. The sergeant major from the PRT is doing this to help the area more relaxing for the airman & soliders. WHAT THEY NEED: Poker cards, Poker Chips, Pool Sticks, Balls, Posters, Flags anything to boost moral & add to their morale room. Let’s not forget while we prepare to celebrate the holidays there IS ANOTHER world outside our windows and support our hero’s. Please email me for details of where to send. THANK YOU.
